塩野七生

1937年7月7日、東京生れ。学習院大学文学部哲学科卒業後、イタリアに遊学。1968年に執筆活動を開始し、「ルネサンスの女たち」を「中央公論」誌に発表。初めての書下ろし長編『チェーザレ・ボルジアあるいは優雅なる冷酷』により1970年度毎日出版文化賞を受賞。この年からイタリアに住む。1982年、『海の都の物語』によりサントリー学芸賞。1983年、菊池寛賞。1992年より、ローマ帝国興亡の歴史を描く「ローマ人の物語」にとりくむ（2006 年に完結）。1993年、『ローマ人の物語Ｉ』により新潮学芸賞。1999年、司馬遼太郎賞。2002年、イタリア政府より国家功労勲章を授与される。2007年、文化功労者に選ばれる。2008ー2009年、『ローマ亡き後の地中海世界』（上・下）を刊行。2011年、「十字軍物語」シリーズ全4冊完結。2013年、『皇帝フリードリッヒ二世の生涯』（上・下）を刊行。2017年、「ギリシア人の物語」シリーズ全3巻を完結させた。
